Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Browns; Kenny Moore, Colts; Ernest Jones, Rams and Bobby Okereke, Colts are the top four on the run/pass stuffs leaderboard.
A run/pass stuff is a tackle or a loss on a run or a pass play counted the way sacks are. Stats Perform (then Stats, Inc., began tracking this stat in 1993 but they did not include passing plays. It was only runstuffs.
The NFL via NFLGSIS counts passing plays in their tackle-for-loss (TFL) stats but they include solo tackles and lead tackles but not assisted tackles.
NFLGSIS also does not include plays when the tackler forces a fumble. They DO include sacks but not if there was a fumble forced and not if it is a sacks (1/2) sack.
So the NFL TFL accounting method misses some big plays.
Because of those two differences run/pass stuffs is a better overall measure of plays in the backfield other than sacks.
The leaders through week eight, excluding tomorrow's Monday Night Football game.

ReplyDeleteWow, no Crosby on the list? I thought he had four alone against the Packers? Maybe that was it so far ... like the unofficial sack list, I hope you guys could track the top players for stuffs going back to the 50s. If you have, and listed them, can you send a link John?
Unfortunately the data is too incomplete to go back to the 50s but it's a work-in-progress.
ReplyDeleteCrosby had three vs Packers---only ones he's had all year.

ReplyDeleteThanks John. The latest Judge and Jury(TOFTWO) on scary or intimidating players was interesting. Butkus got the nod over Taylor but I am surprised other players like Lambert, Lott, Blount, Tatum and Dick Nighttrain Lane werent mentioned? Those guys could be damn scary coming at you ...
Good article on John Brodie as well. If Jurgensen and Tittle could make the Hall as throwers, why not Brodie? Brodie never had as much talent around him as Tittle and won division titles that evaded Jurgensen. Its close either way. John Hadl compares as well.
I am not in favor of Brodie in HOF. Nor Hadl. But there are some good aspects to their careers. Best comparison is Jurgensen and maybe the difference there is consistency. But while I don't think Brodie has quite enough -- I agree with you that thee can be a case made for Brodie.
