See What Happens When Nike Has Nothing to Do With Your Uniform Design?

 By John Turney

Good things happen. Bucco Bruce returns and the Florida Orange jerseys with red trim also return.

The so-called Creamsicle uniforms will be an alternate in 2023 and beyond and they look good. So, congratulations to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Nike, who ruined the Buc's uniforms in 2014 had nothing to do with this design. They simply used the original template down to the socks.

Nike has failed so many times with uniforms of their own creations it's good that teams are not letting them even tweak the throwbacks.

Well done, Bucs.

  1. throwbacks should be fully accurate throwbacks.....the "best" (probably really meaning most jaw-droppingly awful ) are the 60 Broncos vertical striped brown and old gold/yellow socks uni and the Pirates/Steelers bumblebee jersey from 33

  2. Odd that they had to announce this with a big production as if we had never seen these uniforms before.

Youre right John but lets face it ... we all laughed at those Bucs uniforms at one time ... I still wish the Titans would bring back the Oilers jersies ...

I am over 55 and remember lots of laughter from people about those uniforms. Especially before they made the playoffs. Doug Williams and Lee Roy Selmon gave this team some respect

    2. "Creamsicle" is more recent verbiage. I think football uniform aficionados adopted it. But you cannot find it commonly used back in the day.

But for whatever reason, most people seem to like them now. So much so that fans basically demanded them and the Bucs brought them back as soon as the one-shell rule ended>

Maybe some people did laugh at them but some people liked them ... Chris Berman (possibly who coined 'Creamsicle') like them. I know I did.

But the main thing is that Nike was not allowed to mess them up. Nike ruined the Browns and after five years the ugly unis were gone and the classics were back. They ruined the Bucs with the clock-alam numbers and as soon as was possible they returned to the red and pewter...something that Nike didn't do. Nike is a menace to NFL uniforms. When they do a rebrand most, if not all, are terrible and many revert back to what they had prior to Nike's involvement.

Uniforms in general is a much bigger subject than just this...but for whatever it's worth I think it's possible there was some love and some hate for the old Bucs uniforms ... but I think most everyone hated the Bucs uniforms from 2014-19. Just a Nike blunder...

      Reeboks were worse IMO

    4. Have to disagree with you there. Though everyone has their own taste. When I see Bucs, Browns, Rams, Jags they are the worst-ever. Reebok never did anything that bad ... to me it is a matter of degree and the level of bad design on Nike is far worse. But that's me. But reasonable people can sure disagree.

    5. As far as Oilers throwbacks---that would be great ... I think it is happening this year. But according to Uniwatch the details are not yet known.

Remember unis from Riddell, Champion, Wilson and others? I miss those but late-60s uniforms in both leagues can never be equal to me. Ebetts has some great stuff like Mitchell And Ness but for the price, I have to hold out for what I want ...
