This is not from some random X account. This is the NFL's official account, and it poses a ridiculous question. It seems quite premature to call them a duo, much less the greatest duo.
Obviously created for clicks and attention; no problem with that. But there was an interesting response from Gregg Williams: 
Sometimes you just sit back and chuckle. But, hey, they played and coached in the NFL, so they must know better than us, right?
Williams coached both players when they entered the NFL, so he's biased, but while Donald's signing is a big story, it might be wise to see them play together before they can be rated in any way.
If that is not bad enough, Dan Orlovsky is hyping Matthew Stafford again. They were teammates for a few years. So, of course, no bias there. But same thing applies. Cart before the horse.
Players and coaches are not history buffs.
ReplyDeleteTruth. They know things we'll never know, but often forget major details of their own career, or exaggerate their own successes. Here there are displaying bias and in case of Williams, commenting on two guys being best duo but have never set foot on the field.
DeleteMaybe at end of season and if both are DPOY candidates it might be said they are the best duo for a single season, but as this moment, the only "duo" possible is two players on different teams now on same team with the most major postseason honors or something like that.

unquestionably the Rams will be lining up two all-time greats, but how 'bout letting it play out before the whole g.o.a.t. moniker is attributed?

DeleteExactly. Even if they meant most talented, it's still only fair to see what they do this year.
I've been thinking about Garrett lately. In a modern setting with big O-linemen and sophisticated passing offenses, he might just have a place on the best defensive line one could come up with.
ReplyDeleteReggie White, Aaron Donald, and JJ Watt are locks for me. From what I know about Randy White he was a beast, but I'm not sure his size would stand the test of time. And of course, people are speculating about whether Garrett can break Bruce Smith's sack record, but I'm more interested in whether he is a flat-out better player than Smith. I'm beginning to think he might be.
