  3. Bill George was if I recall accurately the FIRST of George Allen's "Over the Hill Gang"......had a fine last year in LA......now, sharp-eyed readers will note that Mr. Marchetti is not the GOAT at the defensive tackle position he's lined up in....followers of Gino's career will note that Coach Keith Molesworth had him mis-positioned at offensive tackle during the former Dallas Texan DE's 1953 first year in the revived Baltimore Colts franchise....fortunately for Mr. Marchetti (and posterity), Weeb Eubank put things to right, and put Gino back on defense where he dominated (and arguably as the authentic GOAT at Defensive End....what's he doing in Billy Ray Smith's spot one might ask? Marchetti retired after the 1964 season to run his chain of burger joints....after a full year in retirement, he returned to the Colts as a backup defensive lineman as a favor to Carroll Rosenbloom when injuries depleted the Colts in 66....Gino was used in situation substitutions (almost always in an interior spot) and as an extra lineman in goal-line situations in the 4 games he appeared that year....

  4. everyone knows how fond George Allen was of "old guys".....when the coaches voted for 1966 Rookie of the Year (true story), Allen voted for
"that guy who's been away for a year....Gino Marchetti"

  5. Its still hard to believe that Allen couldnt win a championship. The 69 Rams may have been his best chance because the Redskins shot their load beating the Cowboys in the 72/73 NFC Champ game , another example of a QB(Kilmer) having a great game/win before falling on his face in the Super Bowl.

  6. maybe the rams were just missing that special something to put them over the top? something unquantifiable? they certainly seemed to have the top notch talent and coaching.

  7. I watched these great Rams teams back when they were often the featured 4:00 game game on CBS (3:00 where I watched, in the Midwest). They weren't bad on offense either with Roman Gabriel, Dick Bass, Jack Snow, Les Josephson, et al. Great memories of cold, snowy Sundays.
