In games where the Rams played on artificial surfaces, Fred Dryer would have Don Hewitt, the Rams equipment manager tape a normal knee pad, upside down, to his pants. Said Dryer, "Yes, this is what you learn to do after you destroy your knees. Works great."
It extended the protection to the are not covered by pad in its normal pocket inside the pants. That left the knee vulnerable to scrapes, so this was concocted.
