WFL's Southern California Sun's Color Scheme the Boldest in Football History?

LOOKING BACK
By John Turney

Wow. That Magenta dark jersey is so bright it hurts the eyes. The white jersey seems to have more pinkish numerals. Even for 1974 California, this is a bold concept.

But that is not all these jerseys topped off an orange pair of pants:

Oddity: Two kinds of socks on the Sun

Oddity: Alternate Jersey

  1. The alternate jerseys were never worn in a game. It appears that these jerseys were worn in publicity photos for the team program, etc. in 1974. My guess is that they ditched these jerseys prior to the 1974 season because the orange numbers on magenta were probably difficult to read from the stands and press box. (Similar to the one-game jerseys worn by the Cleveland Browns in the 1984 preseason where the orange numbers on the brown jerseys were difficult to discern from the stands.)
