1978 Leroy Neiman Art for Super Bowl XII CBS Graphics

LOOKING BACK
By John Turney

For Super Bowl XII CBS-TV commissioned artist Leroy Neiman to paint artwork that could be used to introduce the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos offensive groups.

Television then, as it does now, introduces the players to the viewing audience through graphics illustrated by photos (that often look like mugshots). For the Super Bowl XII telecast, these pieces of art were used.

  1. Is there any way to get a higher res of these photos? Every upload of Super Bowl 12 broadcast that i've seen does not have these amazing images.

    2. where did you source the pictures in the article from? I am an artist and also a huge football fan so this intrigues me, i guess Neiman used an "electronic palette" to create these drawings, an early precursor to drawing on an ipad.

    3. They are poorly sourced from the CBS Telecast of Super Bowl XII and they are paintings circa 1977-1978. Neiman has a style all his own. On the tab above called "NFL art" you can search for his name and see examples of his work. He was amazing, IMO
