Late 1970s—Early 1980s DAMAC NFL Posters

LOOKING BACK
By John Turney

Really, the last set of NFL posters came from a Tennessee company called DAMAC. Chuck Ren was the artist for their posters. They kind of rolled out over a several-year period, with the more popular teams getting a second and even third poster. In all, they released posters from 1977 through 1983.

Here is the initial set with some of the second versions:

Here are some of Dan Tearle's second editions or homages to Chuck Ren's work.

  1. Hmm. Someone added Dorsett's name to his jersey on that poster (it's not there on the original). And Zorn's image is based on a Staubach photo from the 1978 season.

  2. Odd seeing a Chiefs player in that time period not wearing a Dungard facemask.

  3. Those are all beautiful. I like that real players were depicted.

  4. I have the 1983 Dallas Cowboys poster in mint unhung condition. But its printed in the UK and with a UK address too. But 100% authentic. Must have some value?

    1. The UK ones (usually by Sovereign print or the Picture Factory) are fairly common still. Value is £15-20 unframed, £20-30 framed.
The smaller versions £5-£10 tops. Hope that helps!

  6. Robert Lee Vinson played for the Eagles and the 49er, as I was told. After football Bob started Damac. He had several artists. Chuck was an artist Bob found right out of art school. Hired Chuck to paint the posters for him. Bob got no credit for his designing. He would tell Chuck what he wanted on the posters. Bob was a wonderful man. He took any mention of playing football away. He had a massive heart attack in Fla. or he would have never sold Damac and with it his posters. Rest in peace Mr. Vinson.
